Varuni Obeyesekere

Varuni Obeyesekere BSc (Hons) is a medical research scientist working in the Diabetes Technology Research Group and the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes at St Vincent’s Hospital. She previously worked at the Baker Institute as a key member of a team that discovered and patented the gene for 11-beta hydroxysteroid dehyodrogenase type II (11bHSD2).  Subsequent research investigations uncovered the role 11bHSD2 in Apparent Mineralocorticoid Excess. At St Vincent’s Hospital Varuni has been involved in a number of research studies including skeletal muscle metabolism in subjects with type 2 diabetes, dysglycemia after renal transplantation and inflammatory biomarkers for diabetic kidney disease.
